Overview

The FDM 3D printer toolhead is the heart of the material extrusion process. It is responsible for extruding, heating, depositing, and cooling the filament.

This is a list of publically available toolhead designs which can built using a combination of 3D printed parts as well as an extruder, hotend, fans, LEDs, and PCBs. There are so many different options available for a huge variety of printers. The list will focus solely on community made toolheads for opensource custom 3D printers.

Note: Often toolheads designed for Printers for Ants have mods or alternative mounts available for full size 3D printers.

The most common size of printers are the full size printer. They typically have a print volume of 250-350mm^2. The extra space leaves room for larger toolheads with larger fans and hotends.

Popular Full Size 3D Printers:

  • Voron 2.4
  • Voron Trident
  • Voron Switchwire
  • VzBot
  • Ratrig V-Core 3
  • Ratrig V-Core 4
  • LH Stinger

Printers for Ants are a collection of small formfactor custom 3D printers. They typically have a print volume of 180mm^2 or less. Due to there smaller size, they often also require smaller toolheads to avoid losing print any amount of their precious print volume.
